Did you know that you can drill a square hole?

Yes. Yes, you can. Reuleaux Triangle.

You can read about it here. It even has the formulas.

Now we just need square screws and stuff.

Neanderthal Spencer

The camping trip sort of changed my day to day in a few ways.

For one, some of you have noticed that my email response has changed. I have written very little emails (and even blogs) and responded to even less. I have actually used the phone more. I found I don’t even sync my PDA as often—which, if you know me, is pretty crazy.

Also, I find myself getting really sleepy around sunset. And fairly alert before sunrise.

I have found myself stepping slightly away from my gadgets and looking out the window more and taking deeper breaths.

Weird. I don’t know how long it will last, but I would give it until the end of the week. My PDA is vying for attention.

Why I like the road trips.

Driving usually means I am on my way to work, or coming home from work, or having to go to Home Depot to fix something at my house.

So, if driving is something so synonymous with tedious tasks–why do I roadtrip? Is roadtrip even a verb?

Well, a little background.

I like my car. I like to take pictures. I especially like good company. I also like listening to music. Combine them all, and you get a road trip.

Plus, for tech geek’s, a road trip is an excellent way to apply one’s toys.

For trips, these are the several cool toys I have used (on here whether or not they are electrical or not)

  • Socketcom Bluetooth GPS
  • Dell Axim x50v Pocket PC PDA
  • Sony Ericsson EDGE Card
  • Alpine IVA-D300 multimedia headunit (and the rest of the car stereo accouterments)
  • Sony Playstation 2
  • Q-Grille
  • Laptop with Windows Media Center 2005 (for watching the shows from home, just while on the road)
  • 5 day cooler
  • Lots of cameras
  • 4 person tent

Add some flashlights, a lantern, a AAA card, and some good tunes, and you’ve got the ingredients for a cool tech road trip.

For me, leaving my home by car to discover a new place is really fun. Plus, camping is cheap and split gas among passengers and it’s cheaper than flying. Plus, you can’t take pictures in a plane.

No EDGE network in the desert.

Well, it’s been a long while. I have spent the last week (or so) enjoying a day of migrained sleep on the busiest shopping day, Thanksgiving preparation, much eating, driving, and–oh yeah, freezing in the desert.

So, for the past few days, I haven’t had an EDGE network in the desert. No cell phone signal. Talk about disconnected. But we got to take some cool pictures.

It had been a while since the last road trip (since before the funky poison spider incident) and I have been itching to get out of the state. My fiancee had recommended the Grand Canyon, so off we went.

We did lots of things.

We drove over tons of desert.

Drove over the state line.

Went to see the London Bridge in the US.

We went to Lake Havasu. Needed a jump start the next morning.

Then we stopped at this cool bridge thing over something scenic.

Ate at Sonic’s.

Then more desert.

Then the Grand Canyon.

Here’s the view from our campground.

Then it was time to head back.

We saw some cool sign along the way.

Good times to be had.

Next week, it’s off to Mexico for some dental surgery.

Old Globe

I went over to see the Christmas tree lighting at our Old Globe theater in Balboa Park. It was pretty nice and signifies the coming of my favorite time of the year—Christmas time.

I also saw Much Ado about Nothing with my fiancée there, enjoyed new seasonal Starbucks goodness.

Congratulations Alfred and Jenn!

Wow–I’m still a little bit sore from the dancing. I may be getting too old to krump.

Anyhow, check out the pictures that I took at the wedding, over here: http://spoontr.com/aljenn.

Irony

You know what’s weird?

Today is my day off. I sat on my fat butt down to watch all the shows that I haven’t had the time to. Today’s set of shows to watch and waste away my day?

The Biggest Loser.

Did the 30K on the car

Apparently I am made of money.

Remember, I need to friggin buy myself a tooth that will cost me a ton of money. Now I just did preventative maintenance on my car, and the man on the other side said something along the lines of me needing to clean my throttle. It’s only $70 more.

Not like the price of the 30K check-up was not expensive enough.

Sheesh.

So, as it stands, my car is running fine (but it was before). I suppose that’s good, as it needs to drive me over 2 hours to a dentist in Mexico.

So…I had an interesting weekend. Tooth or two Macbook Pros.

It’s Tuesday, and now I am writing about my weekend. One can say it was an action-packed weekend of sorts. I haven’t had weekends like this in a long time.

Friday:
- picked up prescription
- watched A Prairie Home Companion while waiting for my brother to come down
- after originally wanting to go to Red Robin (and finding out that there wasn’t one nearby) we went to Fuddruckers and enjoyed a delicious hamburger with cheesy fries
- my tooth fell out while eating (nothing hard, mind you, and technically, it was a crown)
- went home and played burnout revenge on the playstation with my fiancee and my brother
- watched Heroes (NBC) on the Media Center before going to bed really late

Saturday:
- woke up early and played one more video game with my brother before he left for his house
- made an appointment for the dentist to put on the fallen crown, later on in the day
- went to Costco and discovered ready to grille tri-tip.
- went to dentist, who gave me some bad news. the foundation for the crown was gone and told me that I would be looking at a dental implant. after giving me an estimate ($2,000–I don’t have dental insurance), referred me to an oral surgeon
- found a hidden (more or less) marina with an awesome view of the San Diego bay and took less than stellar images with the camera phone
- went to fiancee’s condo to cook tri-tip and mash potatoes

Sunday:
- woke up and made yummy omelette with tri-tip and mushrooms
- watched Slither (wow, hey, I had a ton of Blockbuster movies to watch)
- took a nap
- went to Quizno’s sub and enjoyed roman chicken salads
- returned Blockbuster movies
- began filling up pool with water (it was very low)
- designed the wedding invitations and continued further work on the wedding website
- forgot about filling the pool.
- my fiancee and I went in the pool (at night) to scoop out lots of water

Monday:
- went to oral surgeon and found out that the cost of an implant, new crown, extraction was going to cost me over $4,000.
- realized my purchase of a Macbook Pro would have to be postponed
- wondered how long it would take to finish the massive Costco tri-tip.

Do I have some lessons learned here? Why, yes. Yes I do.

- Too much of a good thing can be bad (do you know what red meat does to a body?)
- Get dental insurance.
