Neanderthal Spencer

The camping trip sort of changed my day to day in a few ways.

For one, some of you have noticed that my email response has changed. I have written very little emails (and even blogs) and responded to even less. I have actually used the phone more. I found I don’t even sync my PDA as often—which, if you know me, is pretty crazy.

Also, I find myself getting really sleepy around sunset. And fairly alert before sunrise.

I have found myself stepping slightly away from my gadgets and looking out the window more and taking deeper breaths.

Weird. I don’t know how long it will last, but I would give it until the end of the week. My PDA is vying for attention.

So do you think I should spend a week or so out in the dessert? Think that would help me with my circadian rhythm? Hmm… It might help me with my writing too!

I’m starting to brew up an idea.

See…when you’re at a national park, when the sun goes down and there are no nearby stores nor a (perish the thought…) Starbucks to go to, when it’s dark–there’s nothing to do but huddle in a tent with a lantern and possibly a book, or at a campfire. But nothing else. So you just sleep.

Actually–the weird thing is, while packing up the tent on the last day, I thought about you and wondered when the last time you went camping was. I have the equipment if you want to go. And like I said, Cleveland National Forest is about an hour away. Just spend a few nights there. I would recommend, however, bringing an air mattress as a sleeping bag might not be enough to cushion the back. Plus, it’s pretty fun if you bring someone along.

The last time I went camping was when I was in the Boy Scouts at 11. That was 1987 or ’88. It was a 10-mile hike, an overnight camp, then hike back.

I will think about a camping trip, actually. It’s getting a little late in the year (I know that it does actually get cold out there — one of my former cow-orkers is a survivalist camper) but I’d love to spend a few days with you out in the woods.

Besides, not only will it give me a chance to reset my circadian rhythm (however temporary it might be), but it’s also the opportunity I’ve been dying for to actually be completely naked in nature, something that I consider not so much sexual as spiritual — but often, for me, the two are closely intertwined.
