I went to the grocery last night to stock up on food. I looked in my cart and saw what I had: pizzas ($5 each), ice cream ($3 per 1/2 gallon), potato skins ($3.50), a whole cheesecake ($3.99 after coupon), and Oreos ($1.50).

I felt bad about it, so I went by the fresh meat department to see if there was anything there. The extra-lean (92-percent fat free) ground beef was $6.99 per pound. Pork loin was $4.99 per pound. Boneless chicken breasts were $6.99 per pound.

Determined not to be defeated, determined that by hell I'd have a salad to balance out the muck, I headed to the produce department. (Along the way I saw $1.50 packs of hot dogs, by the way.) Grapes were $4.99 per pound. Bananas were 69 cents per pound, which is the cheapest thing I found—but still 2.5 times what I paid as a teen in rural Kentucky (29 cents per pound). And the cheapest—I mean the <em>cheapest</em>—bagged salads were $4.99 per bag.

Now tell me who gets fat and who doesn't.
