Eames Lounge Chair

Eames Lounge Chair

I have been scouring every chance I get to look for the cheapest price on the Herman Miller Eames Lounge chair.

It’s such a beautiful chair, but it’s expensive. I’ve told myself a while back, however, that I was going to own me a real piece of mid-century anything from any of my favorite era designers, and what better item to get than comfortable furniture.

I am not as obsessed as some. For instance, take this tattoo’ d gentlemen. While I would some type of permanent item to pass on to my children and such, I can’t see how this would work.

Plus, it’s just not classy.

At any rate, if anyone out there is reading this and knows where I can get one (a real one) for south of the $1500 mark, please let me know.

Here’s what Design Within Reach says about the chair:

In continuous production since its introduction in 1956, the Eames Lounge Chair is widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. It was the culmination of Charles and Ray Eames’ efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology that they pioneered in the ’40s. In Charles Eames’ words, the vision was a chair with the "warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt." The result has become the consummate lounge set, timelessly blending old-fashioned comfort and visionary modernism. Pairing soft, inviting leather with the sleek form of molded plywood, the seat is balanced on a five-star, die-cast aluminum base.

That tattoo is _totally_ faked. And as for getting one… without scouring estate sales and antique furniture stores you probably won’t find an authentic one anywhere below $1500. Even that’s a steal I’d think.

The problem is, I can’t find them for less than $2900. $1500 is just the price that I told myself would be acceptable for a chair that sits one person.

Go to Officedesigns.com. They have the best prices for all the Herman Miller products and they ship everything free. Talk to one of their product specialists, and see if you can get a discount or if there are any deals coming up. That’s what I’ve done in the past with this website and its worked out really well.

Thanks, Jack. I saw they have one–it’s open box (which I don’t mind), but it still is $100 bucks shy of $3000.
